Dear friend,

President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan last week and that is very good news for Black women. From issuing direct cash payments to expanding the child tax credit, the plan is a long-overdue effort to invest in everyday Americans. Read Dominique's piece to learn more about how it will help our children and us

The American Rescue Plan passed because of our razor-thin majority in the Senate. But creating progressive legislation in a country that wants it, shouldn’t be so hard. (75% of Americans supported the bill even though ZERO Republicans voted for it.) A complicated maze of rules is allowing Republicans to thwart the will of the people. Learn more.

All hail to Jordan Wilson, our BlackHer Shero of the Week, for doing her part to advance civic education for the next generation and ensure that our democracy works for us. Her app, Politicking, helps Millennials get engaged in politics and vote. Check her out below.

Finally, many thanks to Kimberlé Crenshaw, CEO of the African American Policy Forum. She's helping us use our voices to protect ourselves and our girls and never forget the Black women, like Breonna Taylor, who have been murdered by the state.

In love and solidarity,

Jocelyn

BlackHer Fact

The American Rescue Plan will temporarily expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is a powerful tool for building economic prosperity for millions of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Unfortunately, many people don't claim it.

Goldman Sachs

In more good news, Goldman Sachs announced that they are making a $10B investment to help at least 1M Black women increase our economic prosperity.

Make no mistake, their investment in us is good business for them. Still, it's good news and they've put together a powerhouse of an advisory board, which includes nonprofit leaders, like Melanie Campbell, president and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and convener of the Black Women's Roundtable, to get it done.

100 Women for 100 Women

Last Friday, Congressmembers Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley joined the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls and over 100 formerly incarcerated women, activists, organizers, and families for “100 Women for 100 Women”, a rally to urge the Biden Administration to grant clemency to 100 women in his first 100 days in office.

“We stand here today at a moment where there are 231,000 women and girls incarcerated, as part of one of the fastest-growing populations in prisons today. Over the last four decades, the number of women who are incarcerated has increased by more than 700%. Increasing at twice the pace of men.” - Congresswoman Cori Bush

#SayHerName

It's hard to believe it, but Breonna Taylor was murdered a year ago. To honor her memory and the lives of all of the other Black women, who have been taken from us, the African American Policy Forum launched this campaign.

It took me a long time to call myself an entrepreneur. But I most certainly am.  In addition to running BlackHer, I own my own fundraising and communications consulting company, which has been quite successful.

Enterprising Women of Color, a new program of Wacif (Washington Area Community Investment Fund), invited me to share more about my entrepreneurial journey on March 25th at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm ET.

I hope you can join us!
