Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, March 12 |
|
|
|
To the parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
"Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
A Lenten Question: Do I truly believe that “WHO I am is God’s gift to me? WHAT I make of myself is my gift back to God and to others?”
One of the stories (parable) in the scriptures this week is about a rich man (living in comfort) and Lazarus (living in dis-comfort). Lazarus sits each day outside the gate of the rich man, hoping for a gesture of compassion. Now, one gets the impression that the rich man is not mean or cruel, that is, he doesn’t chase Lazarus away or harass him … he just ignores him. His treatment is worse than indifferent – he steps over Lazarus as he would step over a stick in the doorway. He treats him as a non-person – Lazarus is invisible to him! Even the dogs show better concern for Lazarus, licking his sores and paying some attention to him.
The story goes on to describe Lazarus “in Heaven” – “carried away by the angels to be with Abraham”. The rich man is “in Hades, where he was being tormented”. In his torment, he pleads to Lazarus “to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool his tongue”. He even goes on to plead for his brothers still “at home” – to plead for them a warning, to live life differently than what he had lived with others. The moral of the story - when we fail to see each other as a “gift from God”, we can easily give ourselves permission to not only be indifferent, but also cruel. Today’s attitudes and behaviours (often vividly described on the evening news) reflects the racism and inner violence and hatred in people’s hearts.
Lent is our opportunity to reflect. “How and to whom have I hardened my heart”? It’s also an opportunity to heighten our awareness – and treatment – of each other. Every person I encounter each day is God’s gift to me – made in His image and likeness. Each person, each encounter, gives me an occasion to give praise and glory to God. Our “AMEN” at the Eucharist confirms my attitude of compassion and acceptance … that “what I have made of myself - my character, my personality, my spiritual integrity - is my gift back to others.
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
God is good … all the time.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI
Something from the Parish:
Mark your calendar:
- On March 14 (7 pm), St. Philip Neri Parish will gather for our Lenten Penitential Service. Come and experience the forgiveness and healing of our loving God.
- Each Friday during Lent, let’s gather to reflect on Jesus’ journey - “The Stations of the Cross” - beginning with prayer at 5 pm, followed by food and friendship. NOTE: The cash donation each week will go to supplement the costs of the Women’s Retreat.
- On Friday-Saturday, May 5–6, the women of St. Philip Neri Parish are invited to gather for a Women’s Retreat. Through scripture, music, ritual and reflection, the Retreat Team will invite you to reflect on how each “Season of Life” can be enriching, challenging and an opportunity to draw closer to God.

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
Well, we've made it through another chilly week but next week looks like we will be enjoying lovely single digits once again! As we keep marching right along towards Spring, I am starting to dream of melting snow, running water, feeling more heat in the sun, little green buds developing on the trees, and shopping for bedding plants!
Of course our Lenten journey continues along too, as we approach our third week - already. Let's see what's coming up for this week, in our Parish and around our Diocese, as we proceed along our journey of prayer, fasting and alms-giving:
- Be sure to check out the "Week-at-a-Glance" section directly below so that you can easily see what is happening around the Parish for this upcoming week. I have also added our staff (and other Parish leaders) contact information at the very bottom of the Newsletter, in case you ever need to contact someone specific for assistance.
- A reminder that St. Philip Neri Parish's Lenten Penitential Service is THIS Tuesday, March 14, at 7 pm. You may find the dates and times of other Penitential Services at various east-side parishes just below.
- The dates and times of the Triduum/Easter Services coming up during Holy Week remain below for your reference.
- A reminder that the Stations of the Cross, that special time of focused prayer during Lent, continue at 5:00 pm every Friday during Lent. A light supper of meatless soup and a bun will be served right after Stations. Please see all the details just below.
- A reminder that if you have a little five-year old at home that is gearing up for Kindergarten this fall, St. Philip Elementary School registration is now open! You can find more information and details by scrolling down.
- For the month of March, we continue to collect canned vegetables and 100% real fruit juice for the Food Bank. Thank you for continuing to fill our bin for them! More details are below.

- Please note: The Bereavement Support gatherings will be on hold until Tuesday, April 25. There are more details below.
- The Golden Age card players will be getting together again on Wed. March 22 for another afternoon of friendly card competition. More details are below.
- Check out this week's Church Chuckle! Some things just can't be hurried!
- Here are a few reminders about what's going on around our Diocese. A reminder of the Lenten Mission over at Our Lady of Lourdes from March 27-30. Please see all the details below.

- Finally. the next Philipino Mass at St. Paul Co-Cathedral is also NEXT Sunday, March 19, at 5 pm. Those details are also way down below at the bottom.
Have a great weekend, and week ahead, everyone! Even though it's been a chilly week, at least the sun is shining and our days keep getting longer! Sadly, we might have to do a little more shoveling this weekend - hopefully it will be the last time we have to do that! If you're a curling fan, enjoy the Brier championships this weekend - the skilful precision of those seasoned curlers never ceases to amaze me! May your THIRD week of Lent be filled with moments of quiet prayer and reflection, opportunities for different forms of fasting, and sharing your treasures with others. Talk to you next week!
Continued Lenten Blessings,
Marlene
