NEWS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH

September 15 marks the start of the National Hispanic Heritage Month

It also marks the Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18, respectively. The month continues until October 15, recognizing Indigenous People’s Day, Día de la Raza, (roughly translated as the day of our race or people) as the first encounter between the European “explorers” and the indigenous inhabitants of the islands now called the Bahamas. Hispanidad and Latinidad play an essential role in the fabric of our American society, from serving in the national government to the essential workers that have maintained a sense of normalcy for the rest of us throughout the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.
