Oy! to the world
Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade she’s hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach.
But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkah’s not magical. It’s not merry. It’s not Christmas. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachel’s determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemy—Jacob Greenberg.
Though Rachel and Jacob haven’t seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkah—and Jacob—in a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.

9/28/21 - St. Martin's Press - $19.99
When newly-divorced Ivy Perkins buys an old farmhouse sight unseen, she is definitely looking for a change in her life. The Four Roses, as the farmhouse is called, is a labor of love—but Ivy didn't bargain on just how much labor. The previous family left so much furniture and so much junk, that it's a full-time job sorting through all of it.
At the top of a closet, Ivy finds an old Santa suit—beautifully made and decades old. In the pocket of a suit she finds a note written in a childish hand: it's from a little girl who has one Christmas wish, and that is for her father to return home from the war. This discovery sets Ivy off on a mission. Who wrote the note? Did the man ever come home? What mysteries did the Rose family hold?
Ivy's quest brings her into the community, at a time when all she wanted to do was be left alone and nurse her wounds. But the magic of Christmas makes miracles happen, and Ivy just might find more than she ever thought possible: a welcoming town, a family reunited, a mystery solved, and a second chance at love.

11/16/21 - G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers- $18.99
Jan Brett's striking illustrations and the Christmas classic The Nutcracker are a match made in picture book heaven.
When Marie and her brother Fritz receive a special Christmas nutcracker from their uncle, Marie immediately feels something magical. "He looks like a real boy," she mused. "A real boy with a secret, who came from far away."
This feeling is only the beginning of the epic adventure she goes on with the Nutcracker—into the cabinet, through the battle with the mice, and finally to the magical land of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Jan Brett makes this classic her own by setting it in snowy Russia and adding whimsical touches to the favorite elements of the traditional ballet. Enjoying this book will be an instant Christmas tradition for families who love the ballet and those new to the story.
As perfect a gift as Jan Brett's classics The Mitten and The Night Before Christmas.

12/28/21 - Quill Tree Books - $19.99
Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera reunite to continue the story of Arthur and Ben, the boys readers first fell for in the New York Times bestselling rom-com What If It’s Us.
Ben survived freshman year of college, but he’s feeling more stuck than ever. His classes are a slog, his part-time job working with his father is even worse, and his best friend Dylan’s been acting weird for weeks. Ben’s only real bright spot is his writing partner Mario, who’s been giving him a lot of Spanish lessons and even more kisses. Mario’s big Hollywood dreams make Ben start to dream bigger—and the choices he makes now could be the key to reshaping his future. So why can’t he stop thinking about a certain boy from his past?
Arthur is back in New York City for the first time in two years, ready to take the theater world by a storm as the world’s best . . . intern to the assistant of an off-off-Broadway director. Of course, it sucks to be spending the summer apart from his sweet, reliable boyfriend, Mikey, but he knows their relationship is strong enough to weather the distance. Which is why it’s no big deal when his ex-boyfriend Ben stumbles back into the picture. And it’s definitely fine that Ben’s blissfully happy with some mystery boy. First loves are special, but it’s way too late for what-ifs. Right?
Even as the boys try to shake off the past, they keep running into each other in the present. Is this the universe trying to tell them there’s a do-over in their future?

12/18/20 - New Mythology Press - $16.99
Winner of the Imadjinn Best Fantasy Novel award.
An elite Watcher trainee, fifteen-year-old Princess Adana had everything going for her. Everything, that is, until her mother, the queen, dies. Too young to be queen herself, her mother’s last royal act is a decree that seals Adana’s fate—she’s to be sent to the neighboring Kingdom of Elwar for her own protection. She’ll be alone there, as the only person Adana knew in Elwar—her betrothed, Prince Serrin—dies at the same time as her mother.
The three-year stay in Elwar seems like a death sentence, as she will be separated from her telepathically-bonded giraffe and removed from her Watcher training. It only gets worse when she meets the person who will be teaching her about the rules of court protocol and politics—Serrin’s stepmother, Queen Quilla, a sharp-tongued woman who dislikes everything Adana stands for.
When a vision shows her the existence of Maligon—a tyrant thought killed twenty years prior—she realizes everything is not as it seems in the Four Kingdoms. Evil is at work in the shadows, and Maligon will stop at nothing short of total control over the Four Kingdoms. Will she be ready in time to claim her birthright, or will Maligon succeed with his malevolent plans?

The Stolen Hours by Allen Eskens
The beginning of a fabulous new series from Allen Eskens. Lila Nash is a newly minted (almost official) prosecuting attorney. She is determined to get justice for rape victims , and put the perpetrators away for a long time. Something that didn’t happen when she was attacked 10 years earlier. When a rape and attempted murder seems to have links to previous murders. Lila and the detectives soon think maybe her case is also related. But there is absolutely no evidence. Not only does Lila have to contend with her past trauma rearing it’s ugly head but she has to deal with the head of the division who wants nothing more than a chance to fire Lila. This is a terrific example of great police work, determination and what a women can do when she faces her fears and doesn’t let the bad guys win. You will love Lila and her boss Andie Fitch.

Murder Under Her Skin by Stephen Spotswood
What a fun read! A traditional mystery set in 1946 with two female private investigators who are called to a travelling circus to help find the murderer of the tattooed lady from the side show. This case is of particular interest to Willowjean (Will) Parker who has been working for the brilliant and world-famous detective Ms. Pentecost for the past few years) because she lived and worked at the circus for 5 years and considered it home and the employees her family. I cant wait to read about more cases that this interesting and witty duo are able to solve.

My Darling Husband by Kimberly Belle
Wow! I sure am glad I started this book when I had time to read it in one sitting. I loved the way it was told alternating between a journalists interview with famous chef Cam Lasky, the Atlanta Steak King, 6 months after a home invasion in which his wife, Jade, and their two young children were held for ransom by a masked gunman, and from the time frame of the abduction. We see from Jades point of view, from Cams point of view during the time of the abduction and a little bit from the abductors point of view. No matter the outcome you know it cant turn out good you just dont know who will end up paying for things from the past or how much it will cost.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg
If you are a fan of Scandinavian Noir as I am you will love this twisty, dark police procedural set in Denmark, which was an Indie Next pick in hardcover. The young downstairs tenant, Julie Stender, is found brutally murdered by the second floor tenant and he ends up in hospital because of a heart attack. The owner Estelle de Laurenti who lives on the third floor has a weird connection to the murder an unpublished novel she is working on seems to have been the basis for the murder and the way it was carried out. But, Estelle is too old and too feeble to have been able to carry out the gruesome murder. This is a character driven mystery that will keep you guessing to the end. I cant wait for the rest of the books in the series to be translated into English.

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
One of the most brilliantly written thrillers Ive read in a while! Told in a letter written in prison while awaiting trial for murder, Rowan lays out the circumstances of her taking a job as a nanny to a family in Scotland, the death of one of her charges, and her innocence, hoping she can convince a famous solicitor to take her case. The setting in an old manor in the middle of nowhere Scotland adds to the creepy, ghostly, almost gothic like atmosphere. The addition of smart lights, cameras, sounds and the Happy app to control the entire house just add to the feeling that someone is watching Rowan at all times. It is richly written, has a wonderful, complex plot, and an ending that will leave you agape Im still trying to process it all. Oh, Ms. Ware youve done it again!!

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam
Amal is in prison after being accused of something he didn't do, violence he didn't commit. But this story is not about what Amal did or didn't do. Rather, this profound novel in verse is about the societal systems in place that make his prison sentence seem almost inevitable, and how he uses his art as an outlet to ground himself and to speak out against those systems. A must read for fans of Jason Reynolds' Long Way Down.

Twelve Nights by Andrew Zurcher
Kay's father has not just gone missing -- it's like his existence is in the process of being erased. When two wraiths come into Kay's bedroom in the middle of the night to collect her father's things, they're surprised that Kay can see them. When Kay demands answers about her father, the wraiths end up taking her with them to their world, which is in upheaval, and which Kay and her father and sister may have a part in saving. Zurcher's tale is an ode not just to story, but to storytellers and the magic they weave and the possibilities they engender. Perfect for fans of Kelly Barnhill's The Witch's Boy.

Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This book is a must read! I could not put it down. Benjamin Alire Saenz is a sage of literature that brings the story to life in a way that you feel like you are part of the story. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will not be able to put this book down. Date and Aristotle Dive into the Waters of the World continues the journey that began in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Aristotle (Ari) and Dante are facing their last year in high school. They are also in love, but what does that mean? To the outside world, it seems like their love is wrong and shameful. To their families and close friends, their love is beautiful and special. To Ari and Dante, it’s a constant journey of discovery of what love actually means no matter what anyone else thinks. It’s also a time that Ari discovers his own voice, to stand up for what he believes in, and defend those in need of help. Neither Ari or Dante know what their future will hold for them, but what ever it is, they will face it together. Dante and Aristotle Dive into the Waters of the World is a wonderfully deep and lyrical book about understanding one’s self, standing up for what you believe in, and the true meaning of love. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed Abdi Nazemian’s Like a Love Story or Becki Albertalli & Adam Silvera’s What If It’s Us.

The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan
Brennan has created an intriguing plot and a set of characters who come alive in her writing. Sororities are like any group of diverse individuals, they result in lifelong friends or something you spend your life trying to forget. Brennan has harnessed all the emotions you experience at a vulnerable time and woven a complex story of betrayal, accidents and determination. Lucas has an agenda and tremendous drive, but with a naive approach to how the world works. The addition of Regan Merritt, a recently divorced former US Marshall is what Lucas needs to channel his efforts. Regan has multiple issues and this is the distraction and challenge that she needs. The cast of individual's in the sorority are people you can recognize and in some cases be glad you never met. One of her best books.

Twenty Years Later by Charlie Donlea
A great plot that incorporates family, lifelong friendship, betrayal and the specter of 9/11. Avery seems like an all American girl who has achieved her dream job. She is the new anchor for a well received news/life show. It appears she has an amazing life. And she does, unfortunately much of it is in a deeply buried past. Walt is an unwilling retired FBI agent who has hidden away from life in the remote area of Jamaica. Their lives collide when Walt's early career intersects with Avery's current career. The plot is deep with several sub-plots that keep you guessing about how it will all come together. The ending is very unexpected on several fronts. Any good crime and mystery fan will enjoy this book.
