The opening of Mayfield Eight, which tells about Cal Ryder being fatherless, comes from something that really happened out of Sonny's book of an early member of that club coming back from the hospital after seeing his newborn child. He got hit by a train and died. It happened in Oakland, Ca 1959.

I used that as a starting point, drawn to the tragedy to tell of Cal's father also crossing railroad tracks (across the highway named ...Mayfield Eight of course). A long skid mark in the road marks both the real and fictional account.

My fictional story differs a little from the real one, taking place in 1957 Albuquerque, but it was that real event that lent a spark to my imagination and sent me on my way.
