Reflections on 2019

The end of 2019 has seen the publication of the 2018 Pisa test results. The continued decline maths performance in our schools is in contrast to the quality and innovative teaching practices many educators have shared in the AAMT conference and exchanges this year. AAMT has issued a press release about this. While the Pisa results provide an opportunity to reflect on teaching content and methods, there is no doubt that Australia has an organisational challenge. We have some great teachers and classroom practices spread across the country. The question is how we harness this talent, share experience and expertise and support subject professional learning for all maths teachers. AAMT and its State and Territory Affiliated Associations will continue to work for this next year.

We’d like to thank all our members and supporters for their participation in AAMT and Affiliate activities during 2019 and wish everyone a happy and restful Christmas and New Year.

STEM Day: Collaboration between AAMT and ASTA

AAMT is collaborating with ASTA (the Australian Science Teachers Association) to organise a STEM Day at the CONASTA conference in Canberra in July. If anyone would like to present on the topic of Inquiry-based STEM: Teaching maths and science with modelling and data please see here.

Overseas Exchange Opportunities 2020

AAMT will organise a study tour to Singapore in July 2020. This will include participation in the MERGAconference, workshops and school placements.

The exchange with Maths Hubs in the UK is still open. This is for anyone interested in a 2 – 3 week placement at a UK Maths Hub. Schedules and itinerary are arranged between the participating teacher and the host Maths Hub.

Be part of Australia’s first Maths Teacher Circles.

Kick-off for Australia’s first Maths Teacher Circles which will be held in Melbourne from January 2020, with a two-day Immersion Workshop. Throughout the school year, local circles will then host after-school sessions drawing on a range of facilitators and themes.

AAMT Office Closure

The AAMT office will be closed for the Christmas break between December 24 and January 6.

Due to the relocation of the office to Canberra, we will be unable to offer books sales through the online shop in January. We’re looking forward to bringing members a new online shop in 2020, which will be part of a website upgrade that we are planning for next year.
