GeoGuessr Website
Thank you everyone for celebrating our one year anniversary with us. Now back to the regular programme schedule. This week on Pub Convos letβs talk about one of my favourite online games which I think is just genius β GeoGuessr.
Founding
GeoGuessr is a simple game where the aim is to guess your location based on Google Maps Street View.
The game was designed by a Swedish IT consultant Anton Wallen who was inspired by his love of visiting far off places using Google Street View.
It was released on the 9th of May 2013 and received favourable reviews by visitors to the website.
How it Works
The classic game consists of 5 rounds.
Each round the player is dropped into a random location on Street View.
The player is then allowed to move around and use the information gathered such as physical geography or signs to guess their location.
Once a location is guessed, points are given based on the distance from the location. The closer you are, the more points are awarded.
A maximum of 5000 points is given when the distance from the location is less than 150 meters while the lowest score is 0.
Variations and In Popular Culture:
There are many different maps to choose from like Famous Places or Country-specific maps.
The rules can also be customised as players have come up with rules such as no zoom, no moving and timed guesses.
Many Youtubers have made content based on them playing the game and have received positive receptions from audiences.
An idea based upon a passion for travelling using technology is now a widespread game for millions of players. Shows just how a small idea can turn into a genius business. With travelling still put on hold with Covid, maybe this is the best chance for us to see the world.
