Workability: Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities for those 65+
Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities (MBIWD) is a program that enables workers with disabilities to maintain their eligibility for Medicaid while working. Eligibility for MBIWD was for those 18 to 64 years of age. We all know that people continue working after age 64.
The Department of Medicaid is implementing a new program called Workability starting in October 2024. Workability will be similar to MBIWD; however, it will be for those 65 and older. The eligibility criteria will be as follows:
- Be aged 65 or older.
- Be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen.
- Be an Ohio resident.
- Have a disability as defined by the Social Security Administration.
- Be working with no specific employment requirements.
- Does not meet the eligibility criteria for another category of Medicaid.
- Long-term care services such as home and community-based services will be companion coverage with Ohio Workability.
- Family net income compared to 250% FPL for the family size.
- Individual net unearned income is less than or equal to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Residential State Supplement (RSS) income standard.
As with MBIWD, Workability will have monthly premiums if an individual’s income warrants one.
This is a major milestone for Ohioan with disabilities! Yay, for Ohio advocates and Ohioans with disabilities!
