Nineteen sixty-nine was an eventful year in many respects around the world. The unthinkable happened – a human being walked on the moon. Equally unthinkable, in the United States, Charles Manson and his ‘disciples’ wrought bloody havoc in Los Angeles, California. Then, as anti-Vietnam War sentiments heated up, almost half a million people took part in the largest anti-war protest in American history, on November 15 of that year.

Here in Guyana, the year started with the abortive Rupununi ‘Uprising’ which saw a number of fatalities, including five police officers. And as it drew to a close, our country’s first Governor-General, Sir David Rose, himself a former police officer, died in a horrifying freak accident in England.      Continue reading →

TRAVEL: Regional carrier LIAT Back In Operation to seven destinations

Antigua and Barbuda (Tuesday, December 1, 2020) — Sub-regional carrier, LIAT, resumed its commercial services, on November 30, 2020 by providing services to a limited number of destinations and routes.

“The airline will operate flights, 5 days per week, to 7 destinations across the LIAT network. The seven destinations are: Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Kitts, and St Vincent,” the airline revealed in a November 25 press release.         Continue reading →

Guyana blocks about 1,000 Cubans from entering from Suriname; ferry service suspended

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Hilton Todd convened a meeting on December 7, 2020, with Narciso Reinaldo Armador Socorro, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to discuss the pressing issue of a number of Cuban nationals currently camping at South Drain, Suriname desirous of transiting Guyana to get to the United States of America to seek asylum there. Minister Todd was accompanied by Gail Teixeira, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance; Anil Nandlall, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs and Robeson Benn, Minister of Home Affairs.

The Cubans are at South Drain, Nickerie waiting to cross with the ferry that was scheduled to resume operations on December 12. Authorities believed that the Cubans want to enter Guyana to eventually enter Brazil.        Continue reading →
