NE LAP’s 2026 New Year’s Resolutions for Healthcare Professionals
As we begin a new year, consider making one of these resolutions to support the well-being of yourself and your colleagues.
Resolution #1: Help a Colleague Overcome Alcohol or Substance Use
You can:
- Foster a supportive, non-stigmatizing environment.
- Offer help and encouragement.
- Remind them an alcohol or substance use disorder is a disease, not a flaw.
- Recommend contacting the NE LAP for resources and assistance.
Resolution #2: Take Steps to Stop Using Alcohol or Substances Inappropriately
Take action if:
- You’re concerned about your alcohol or substances use.
- Family, friends or colleagues express concerns.
- Your use risks employment or professional licensure, legal issues or relationship damage.
- You mix alcohol or substances with prescription medications.
- You can’t stop your use as intended or need more to feel better or avoid withdrawal.
Resolution #3: Strengthen Your Sobriety and Recovery
If you’re in recovery:
- Stay committed to your recovery program.
- Maintain regular attendance at recovery support group meetings.
- Build a supportive network, including a sponsor.
- Monitor triggers to prevent relapse.
- Care for yourself spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
- Reduce stress and avoid high-risk environments.
- Maintain boundaries.
- Stay vigilant – don’t become complacent.
If you or someone you know is a licensed healthcare professional and experiencing a substance use disorder, please consider contacting the NE LAP at (800) 851-2336 or (402) 354-8055 for confidential help and resources.
