3000 children inspired by great nature experience!

Dear Friends and Supporters, we are excited to bring you several pieces of good news this month:  our nature exploring school program for nearly 3000 children successfully finished, new large enclosures to rehabilitate the otters constructed and completed , one pangolin voluntarily handed over to us by a local person, and more.

Nearly 3000 children had memorable nature and wildlife experience

In May, the program "Valụing Nature in Childhood" program and “Protect the Wildlife We Love” program were completed. With these two programs, 2184 kids from 27 kindergartens and 797 students from three local elementary schools had amazing opportunities to to discover nature, learn about wildlife and gain memorable experiences at Cuc Phuong National Park. Every child is a potential conservationist to value nature and protect the nature they love.

This summer, our School Team will collect, analyze data and write an assessment report of “Valuing Nature in Childhood” project in three-year time and “Protect the Wildlife We Love” project in one year time.

A brand new house constructed for rescued otter to celebrate World Otter Day

After two-month, the rehabilitation enclosure for the otters is completed. The complex includes three enclosures. There are small hills and branches for them to climb, stream and small pool to swim. We have introduced 3 pairs of Asian small-clawed otters into 3 new enclosures. Later on, they will be released in pairs back to the wild.

Our deepest thank you to all donors and supports for your financial support to build this new enclosure! With this facility, we are able improve the welfare and husbandry for the rescued otters and speed up the releasing process.

World Otter Day, 29 May 2019

The enclosure was completed at the crucial time that we celebrated the World Otter Day on 29 May. We created a short video to raise people’s awareness on biggest threat to the otters currently, the pet trade, and call for their actions to not support pet trade or having one as pet.

Celebration of World Binturong Day

Also in May, we celebrated World Binturong Day. There are three binturongs: Mr.B, Ms. B and Hoi An, who are our Educational Ambassador telling their stories to inspire people to protect the species and Vietnam’s precious wildlife.

Local people voluntarily handed over pangolin to authorities

At the end of May, we traveled nearly 1600 km to bring one Sunda pangolin from South Quang Nam Ranger Department to our rescue center in Cuc Phuong National Park. The authorities said that a local people voluntarily handed over the pangolin to them. This is a good sign that people start to care for wildlife and conservation.

Media can help us combat illegal wildlife trade

The workshop "Behind the wildlife trade in Vietnam" was organized by People and Nature Reconciliation for over 20 reporters and journalists in Vietnam. SVW was invited to present at the workshop to help participants understand why we need to protect wildlife and the issues of wildlife farm. It inspired journalists and made them understand the importance of their jobs to support combatting illegal wildlife trade activities.

This was also a great opportunity for strengthening the network between SVW and journalists to support conservation activities. We hope the knowledge we provided to the participants will help them to write and contribute to wildlife conservation and combat illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam.

Training SMART software to improve forest protection

Some members from our Anti-poaching team, rangers of Pu Mat National Park, our field researchers and FFI’s field researchers had one-week training in SMART software at SVW’s office at Cuc Phuong National Park. SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) is developed to record on wildlife criminals operating in the site, improve the ability of law enforcement and biodiversity monitoring in Protected Areas. Mr. James Slade, the expert from Global Wildlife Conservation organization instructed the training course.

Our sincere thanks to Global Wildlife Conservation for sponsoring the workshop!

Anti-poaching Unit

In May, the team encountered 5 violators and filed records of 2 people, detected 29 illegal camps in which 5 camps were active, and destroyed 27 traps.

The summary report of Anti-poaching team can be found below:
