We Need Help!

We have finally realized that we are simply so busy doing the physical work of growing plants that we cannot adequately maintain the various social media that our customers might like us to use.  We are looking for a tech/social media-savvy person who also enjoys plants to help us about one day a week to keep up our online presence.  If interested, please send an email with your information to lynn.ara@gmail.com

Oh No! Where's the Greenhouse?

Remember the little greenhouse (G2) on the right?  We need more space, so we are replacing it with a new G2.  Sure hope we get it done before winter hits!  New G2 will be as wide as our tomato high tunnel (yes, the green inside is still tomato plants)  in the photo above.

While we're at it, we're bubble-wrapping our greenhouses

We can't do all of them at once, so we're starting with the heated greenhouses.  The new covering is called Solawrap, and it is a very heavy duty bubble wrap developed in Germany.  The outside layer is 12 mil, the inner layer is 3 mil.  It has exceptional light quality, with 83% both light diffusion and light transmission, and the plants really respond well.  The high light diffusion reduces shadows so plants can photosynthesize more evenly, and also paradoxically feels cooler to people working inside on sunny days. 

Solawrap is very resistant to high winds and adverse weather like hail, and it should last a very long time (20-year-old installations in Europe seem like new).  It has an R-value of 1.72, which is decent for a greenhouse and certainly much better than our old coverings.  For us, it is a "once and done" project.  We no longer have to be disposing of humongous sheets of old, worn-out greenhouse plastic every 5 years.

We're marrying the Solawrap with an automated side-roll up ventilation system, which will also improve the environment for the plants while reducing our electric footprint (fewer noisy fans).  If we had the setup, we could run our roll ups on solar.  Combined with our existing use of wood pellet stoves and our watering and pest management methods, we truly are practicing sustainability.

The significant drawback to Solawrap is its cost.  So we're not just re-covering our greenhouses, we are investing in them.  You can help--just keep bringing us more new customers!
