The longer I am in Florida, the more obsessed with it I become. Itâs wild and weird and beautiful! đŽđș Here are some books about the history of the area that I have absolutely loved:
Before the Pioneers: Indians, Settlers, Slaves, and the Founding of Miami â Ten thousand years ago, people were here hunting camels with shark jaws, because it used to be desert. And thatâs just the start.
Bubble In The Sun: The Florida Boom of the 1920s and How It Brought on the Great Depression â Real estate speculation here is like nothing elseâthen and now. (This book also has one of my fave introductions to a book ever; like falling dominos in word form.)
Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean â Well over a century ago, lasting for 22 years, there was a railroad that spanned 153 miles of open ocean all the way down to Key West. How it was builtâand why itâs now an empty roadway next to Highway Oneâis an epic story.
