Kryptopyrroluria (KPU), or Haemopyrroluria (HPU), is an under-recognized condition that leads to depletions of key nutrients, notably vitamin B6 and zinc. KPU is prevalent among people with autism, learning difficulties, ADHD, depression and bipolar disorders.
What causes KPU?
Put simply, KPU is caused by the over-production of ‘pyrroles’- a component of red blood cells. Pyrolles can bind to and inactivate certain essential dietary nutrients, notably vitamin B6 and zinc. A buildup of pyrroles in the body can lead to depleted levels of these nutrients, resulting in digestive, hormonal and connective tissue disorders, as well as mental, emotional and neurological problems.
Did you know? White marks on the fingernails ('leukonychia') may be indicative of zinc deficiency. Impaired sense of taste or smell, or poor appetite may also be signs that your body needs more zinc.
Signs of KPU
Clinical clues that might indicate the presence of KPU include:
Poor skin or dental health
Neurological issues
Fatigue
Detoxification issues
Thyroid disorders
Frequent infections
Musculoskeletal symptoms
Gastrointestinal problems
Blood sugar dysregulation
In my blog post, I explore current understanding of how KPU develops - most likely a complex interaction of genetic, physiological and environmental factors. I also explain how the resulting depletion of several key nutrients, especially zinc and vitamin B6 can lead to serious metabolic imbalances.
Detecting KPU
At Brainstorm Health, we regularly recommend screening for KPU if a patient's symptoms indicate that it may be part of the picture. It is detected through a highly sensitive urine analysis carried out by specialist laboratories.
KPU is a complex and debilitating condition. While replenishing lost nutrients can help, it is important to support the body holistically, manage stress levels and address any underlying infections to bring the body back into balance, under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.
