The Potts Family Foundation is passionate about improving the condition of Oklahoma’s future workforce. In 2016, we began the 25 by 25 – Oklahoma Early Childhood Coalition with our goal of raising Oklahoma’s rankings of early childhood wellbeing to the top 25 states by 2025! One area of this effort is helping Oklahoma employers understand, support, and share the importance of the first five years of life and the value of parent’s involvement in the overall healthy development of their children. This is why Potts Family Foundation started the Oklahoma Family Positive Workplace Initiative.
A Family Positive workplace or employer is one whose policies and practices make it possible for employees to more easily balance family and work. Potts Family Foundation is encouraging Oklahoma employers to help their employees by forming Family Positive Policies & Practices. Possible practices include:
» Providing their employees information, resources, and support on building parenting skills
» Providing assistance in identifying quality childcare facilities and information on the availability of these facilities and services
» Consider tax savings and other cost savings programs towards quality childcare for their employees
» Flexible hours & schedules for employees, allowing needed time for their families and general parenting responsibilities
» Providing management training to their leadership team on understanding and showing support to employees with families and family responsibilities
» And many more…In other words, building a Family Positive culture!
Note our use of our new term, Family Positive. We prefer the description Family Positive rather than the long standing Family Friendly because Family Positive conveys the positive impact it can have on both employers as well as employees. We know many employers hold the idea that creating a Family Friendly Workplace cost time and money. But Family Positive policies have a notable ROI for employers. We want to convey the positive impacts for employers. A Family Positive Workplace recognizes that there is a positive return to the business when it helps employees balance family and work responsibilities and takes steps to support them. Employee loyalty, productivity, attendance, and other positive results occur when an employer begins to make even small changes in their policies to be a more Family Positive Workplace.
We invite you to join other employers such as Nextep, Inc., Western Plains Youth & Family Services, Sunbeam, Oklahoma City Zoo, Dal-Tile, United Way of Northwest Oklahoma, Ardmore Refinery, Enid Public Schools, Boeing and Embark in becoming a Family Positive Workplace and changing the way Oklahoma helps prepare for the future while taking care of current employees and their families.
