5-year Anniversary and the special tribute to our supporters

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Five years ago, Save Vietnam’s Wildlife was officially born! Since then, we have always been pushing ourselves to the limit and racing against time, in order to stop the extinction and champion the recovery of threatened species in Vietnam.
This five-year anniversary is a good time to look back, cherish our conservation achievements and plan for the future. More importantly, this has provided us a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and send our deepest gratitude to the donors, partners, supporters, and friends - who always stand beside us all this time!
Thank you for believing in and supporting our mission!

This is only a snapshot of the achievements we have made together in 5 years. More detail is included in our 5-year report.

Wildlife Rescue

SVW runs two rescue centres that rescue about 600 confiscated animals from the illegal wildlife trade per year. We have collaborated with Cuc Phuong National Park and Pu Mat National Park to rescue and take care of 1740 pangolins, carnivores and some other species from illegal trade and about 60% of them were released back into the wild. We have built new 72 quarantine enclosures and 2 veterinary facilities; these will help us to improve the success of our releases and our animal welfare standards.

Species Conservation

Our species conservation team have monitored rehabilitated pangolins after release. The team was busy monitoring released pangolins in Cat Tien National Park and Pu Mat National Park throughout 2018 and 2019. The team monitored a Sunda Pangolin for 8 months, the longest monitoring that has been done for this species. 154 camera traps were set up in Pu Mat National Park and recorded pangolins. Recently the team confirmed the persistence of Owston’s Civet.

Site Protection

To help secure Pu Mat NP as a recovery site for wildlife, SVW established its own enforcement unit in the park. Since its establishment, in June 2018 the team has apprehended 186 people who were in the park illegally, confiscated 41 guns, removed 4,482 animal traps and destroyed 434 illegal camps.

Education Outreach

In 2015, we built the first Carnivore and Pangolin Education Centre in Vietnam, which 8156 school children living around Cuc Phuong NP joined to learn about wildlife conservation. Over 20 workshops were held for government agencies and community representatives to improve combatting illegal wildlife trade, raising awareness and reduce wildlife consumption.

Advocacy

SVW has contributed for wildlife conservation at the national and international levels. We have led on the development of a global species conservation strategy for Owston’s Civet, and worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to build up the national action plan for pangolins in Vietnam. We helped to build capacity for rescuing pangolins cross Vietnam and other rescue centres in the regions.

THANK YOU

SVW highly appreciates and acknowledges our generous donors, partners, and everyone who has been helping us achieve our mission since 2014. Our work would not be possible without your help!

Sincerely,
Nguyễn Văn Thái
