This weekend we celebrate mothers in all their diversity, recognizing the many ways they show love, nurture life, and operate in our lives. We celebrate and pray:
For birth mothers.
For adoptive mothers.
For foster mothers.
For grandmothers.
For those without mothers.
For mothers who are grieving.
For mothers who are worried.
For non-binary and genderqueer parents.
For those that serve as mother figures: aunts, siblings, teachers, coaches, friends, mentors, and many others.
Bless all mothers, in their many forms, with strength, patience, and wisdom. May they feel celebrated, honored, and cherished not only today but every day.
This weekend, I am especially grateful for my mother who loves me unconditionally and continues to inspire me in spirituality, strength, curiosity, and joy.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Just Word
Today Joshua P. Hill invites us to explore ‘making a way out of no way’ with the help of womanist theologians; engage the Jewish tradition of Passover, and its examples of hope and liberation that Christians can learn from; and embody hope and liberation through collective grief, with the help of Mariame Kaba and Kelley Hayes, and the students organizing for Palestine.
"In acknowledging how difficult things are, how difficult this world is, we finally have a choice. When we pretend things are easy, what choice are we really making? We are choosing illusion. But when we come to accept the difficulty of reality for what it is, faith becomes a real and powerful choice, a choice to believe in the possibility of resurrection, of change."
Joshua P. Hill is a former teacher, a writer, and an aspiring organizer. He’s taught English at the high school, community college, and four-year college levels across NYC, before pivoting into the world of social media and organizing and newsletter writing. He works at the Slow Factory and More Perfect Union, and spends a shocking amount of time on Twitter. He’s also done mutual aid organizing and community organizing in lower Manhattan and Crown Heights, Brooklyn. He hopes to be able to spend even more time writing long-form one day, and less time writing in 280 character bursts, and hopes to be able to spend more and more time organizing with his neighbors as well.

Catholic Women Preach
Preaching for the Solemnity of the Ascension, Martha Ligas offers a reflection on proclaiming the Gospel by following the example of creation:
"Our invitation, then, is not to tell others how they are to live. Instead, we are called to lean into our own becoming. The more we can learn to live boldly as ourselves, with integrity, with confidence, and with purpose, the more we will become the Body of Christ that our Christian faith compels us to become. This is how we are to evangelize— by demonstrating what it means to be embodied, fully alive, and rooted in purpose."
Martha Ligas (she/her) serves as the Pastoral Minister at the Community of St. Peter in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Communications Coordinator at FutureChurch. Both spaces give her room to ride the coattails of the Spirit by reimagining what it means to create faith communities of belonging. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Ministry from Fordham University. Martha lives in Cleveland, OH with her partner and their pets.

"Mary Magdalene Goes to the Synod" to Expand the Lectionary |
|
|
|
As we head towards the 2024 Synod, help us spread the word that women’s history is Salvation History and should be included in our lectionary by becoming a Mary Magdalene Advocate!
There is a lot at stake for women and for the Church as a whole in the choice of scripture passages we proclaim on Sundays. The ways in which we understand and know God are formed within the liturgy. What we pray and sing, as well as the stories we re-tell in public worship form and shape what we believe about God, ourselves, and our relationship to God and to one another.
Many Catholics do not realize that important stories of our foremothers in faith are excluded from or diminished in our lectionary. Catholics are deprived of learning about the gifts, grace, courage, leadership and ministry of women like Mary Magdalene, Phoebe, Junia, and Shiprah and Puah. Lifting up and telling the stories these faithful women will help Synod participants and all Catholics understand that women were and, should now be, leaders and ministers in our Church.
