This Sunday we switch from the Gospel of Mark to the Gospel of John. Again we see Jesus acting in an unexpected way, challenging our image of him as the gentle shepherd. In John 2:13-22, Jesus cleanses the temple, chasing animals out and turning over tables. Jesus is not only confronting the religious authorities of the day, but this act confronts us as well with what it means to be created in the image of God.
Chris Davis opens and closes worship with selections from his “Images” collection, which capture the energy of this moment in history as we look to the future with hope. Erin McKibben and Konrad Kono deliver “Prepare the Way of the Lord” 95 (which you may recognize from Advent), then Chris is back with Erin for “Change My Heart O God” 695, and “Lord, Be Glorified” 468. Linda Sorensen brings us a Moment for Mission announcing the Interfaith Sanctuary Alliance’s Love Your Neighbor Weekend. And last but never least, Linda Sizer calls us to worship and reads our Scripture.
Finally, it is Communion Sunday so come prepared with bread and cup.
Faith communities all over Santa Barbara will incorporate the “Love Your Neighbor” theme into their weekly service. Resource packets are available for all interested faith communities, complete with relevant passages from sacred texts, liturgies, and songs. More information at www.loveyourneighborsb.org.
