Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Justice
and
the Marginalized”
Aim: Explore
God’s
standards
for justice;
Appreciate
howGod
loves
those
who are poor and marginalized;
and Share
love
with those who are rejected by others.
Background:
Deuteronomy
24:10-21
Bible Lesson:
Deuteronomy
24:10-21
Memory
Verse:
“But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in
Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command
thee to do this thing.” Deuteronomy
24:18 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The
Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and
belongs
to the set of books known as the Pentateuch or the five books of
Moses. Moses
is credited as the God-inspired author. The
first five Books of the Bible are also
classified
as the Books of Law. Deuteronomy restates the laws given by God to
Moses for the Israelites. This restatement is needed
because the
generation
that was
delivered from
Egyptian
bondage
died during their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. The
descendants of
the delivered Israelites were
preparing to enter the Promised Land and it
was
imperative that they adhered
to God’s Laws
to live
peacefully
and to
prosperous
in
Canaan.
The
section of Deuteronomy for our study deals with some
of God’s
imperatives
regarding social
law for
the Israelites.
-
Deuteronomy
24:10-13:
Borrowers
and Lenders.
The lender is prohibited from exerting undo pressure on the borrower
in the selection the borrower’s pledge to secure the loan’s
repayment. The lender must allow the borrower to
select
the item to pledge. If the item used as a pledge was
something like a cloak, a garment needed for warmth, it could not be
held overnight because it would be needed by the borrower to keep
warm. If the lender adheres
to this
imperative, God counted this act as righteousness, being in right
relationship with God.
-
Deuteronomy
24:14-15: Employer
and Employee.
Employers were admonished to not take advantage of their employees
because the employees are dependent upon their pay to live and to
take care of their families. The admonishment applied to employees
who were Israelites as well as foreigners. Employers were to pay
their employees daily and not to delay payment, because the
employees had need of their wages to live from day to day. If
an employer did not adhere to this imperative, the cry of the
employee would be
heard by God and the employer’s action would constitute
a sin on the part of the employer.
-
Deuteronomy
24:16: Individual
Accountability.
Each individual, whether parent or a child at the age of
accountability is responsible for his/her sin. The Parent is not
held
responsible
for the actions of an accountable child neither is a
child
held
responsible for the sin of a parent. In
Ezekiel
18:2b
the
proverb “...
The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set
on edge?”
was
used as an excuse for the punishment realized by the people, but God
spoke through Ezekiel in Ezekiel
18:3 “[As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have
[occasion] any more to use this proverb in Israel.”
This
accountability extended to even crimes which called for execution.
-
Deuteronomy
24:17-18:
Justice
for the Marginalized.
God demanded true justice for all, for the foreigner, the widow,
the orphan, etc. He championed the cause of the underprivileged who
sometimes did not receive their fair share of justice due to their
social status. Sensitivity needed to given to the circumstances of
the lender-borrower situations when the underprivileged were
involved. God reminded the Israelites that they were once in the
position of the underprivileged when they were in bondage in Egypt.
God had to come to their rescue and
delivery them
from
the hands of the Egyptians. He did not want them
to
forgot from whence they had
come
when dealing those now less fortunate than themselves.
-
Deuteronomy
24:19-21: Sharing
with the Marginalized.
In a
heavily agricultural era,
God commanded that the Israelites not harvest every bit of their
crop, during the harvesting season. They were
to
leave a
remnant
of
their crop
in the fields for the foreigners,
orphans, and widows to glean for their survival.
Take
Aways:
-
Even
the less fortunate deserves justice in God’s world
-
Fairness
in the workplace is required in God’s world
-
Generosity
to the less fortunate is required in God’s world
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Every
man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not
grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” 2
Corinthians
9:7 KJV
“Give,
and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and
shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.
For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to
you again.” Luke
6:38 KJV
“For
the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You
shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You
shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet,"
and if [there is] any other commandment, are [all] summed up in this
saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."”
Romans
13:9 NKJV
“At
that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all
sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who
cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or
who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these
people do not fear me," says the LORD of Heaven's Armies.”
Malachi
3:5
NLT
“Defend
the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.”
Psalm
82:3 KJV
“"Do
not defraud or rob your neighbor. "Do not make your hired
workers wait until the next day to receive their pay.” Leviticus
19:13 NLT
