Summertime is hot in the South of France, which is a great excuse to cool off in the Mediterranean. However, plan to leave early to get parking and a spot for your beach towel. The calanques near Marseille are popular destinations for swimming and hanging out by the sea, but they are so popular that the park has restricted access during peak season due to fire risk. Alternatively, take a guided boat trip from Marseille to the calanques.
However, one way to see art and cool down is at Carrières de Lumières in les Baux. This year's feature program is the Dutch Masters, "From Vermeer to Van Gogh." Alongside that is the colourful Mondrian, the Architect of Colors. In addition, on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, Tintin, The Immersive Adventure. Please check the schedule and buy your tickets in advance.
Between July 28-31, the artists of Forcalquier are celebrating the 10th year of the Les Ateliers Ouverts and the annual artist's open house. One of the joys of visiting Provence is visiting local artisans and learning about ancient crafts, still practiced and relevant today. Discover four artisan creators worth visiting and Sue's visit to a pottery workshop in Caromb in the Vaucluse.
If all you want to do is read a book in a shaded spot at this time of the year, we have a few suggestions, including "The Essence of Provence: the Story of L'Occitane" and "Double Cross."
