…and ditch the plastic! Did you know that plastic bottle packaging often does not get recycled? In fact, less than 9% of plastic gets recycled. Two weeks ago Last Week Tonight with John Oliver did a story about this that’s worth checking out to learn more about the plastic problem and why corporations must be held responsible. It is estimated that in 2050, the ocean will have more plastic than fish!
But not only does the plastic packaging fill up our landfills — those filled plastic bottles are heavy and they end up releasing a lot of emissions to transport from the manufacturer, to the store, and to your home. Most of those bottles are filled with water as the (very heavy) filler, which isn’t even necessary to create a successful product. In fact, it is estimated that bar soap requires one-fifth of the energy to produce compared to liquid soap.
Instead, consider revisiting bar soap instead of using a body wash in a plastic bottle. Take this a step further and consider a bar shampoo and conditioner. Many of us at 7th Generation Advisors are also giving Tru Earth’s laundry detergent strips a try. Think about how much plastic you can spare by changing these few items…and it might just be fun to try out some new products in your life!
To help get you started, here is a list of bar shampoos to consider.
