Thanksgiving Day, annual national holiday in the United States and Canada celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people.
Famous for being a day for eating an abundance of turkey and pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving Day is held on the fourth Thursday in November. This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 24. It is a federal holiday, so most schools and businesses are closed.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Paul
Ministers in Malta”
Aim:
Know how
Paul helped people on the island of Malta;
Appreciate
the ways others minister to us; and Minister
to
those in need.
Background:
Acts 28:1-10
Bible
Lesson:
Acts
28:1-10
“And
it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and
of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his
hands on him, and healed him.” Act 28:8 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Acts is the second New Testament Book (the Gospel According
to Luke being the first) authored by the physician Luke under the
inspiration of God. Its title is sometimes referred to as the “Acts
of the Holy Spirit.” Acts recounts how early followers of Jesus
Christ led by the Holy Spirit spread the Gospel far beyond the
confines of Jewish life to the whole world. In last week’s lesson,
the ship transporting the crew, the soldiers, Paul and the other
prisoners to Rome for Paul’s appearance before Caesar became
shipwreck on an island. In this week’s lesson, the Malta islanders
welcome and treat Paul and the other passengers kindly. In turn,
Paul ministers unto the islanders with prayers and laying on of
hands to heal the sick.
-
Acts
28:1-2, Receiving Help from Strangers: After
Paul and the passengers on the ship that were headed to Rome became
shipwreck, all of the passengers safely either swam or floated on
pieces of the ship
to the island of Malta. The island of Malta is
near Sicily and Syracuse. Paul
and the others
were warmly
welcomed
by the inhabitants of the island. The weather was rainy and cold.
The wet and cold passengers from the ship
were treated kindly by the islanders as
they worked to build a bonfire for warmth.
Sometimes acts of kindness come from unexpected places and from
unlikely people.
- Acts
28:3-6, Divine Protection:
While Paul was
gathering sticks with
others
for the
fire to warm all the passengers, a poisonous snake bit him on his
hand and clung
to him. The islanders believed
that the bite of the poisonous snake was providential. Believing
Paul
to
be a
criminal, they
thought
that Paul had survived the storm at sea and the shipwreck, but now
the bite
of the poisonous snake
was
bringing
justice to a murderer. Paul simply shook the snake off
and it fell into
the fire and he
continued
gathering sticks. The islanders expected Paul at
anytime to
swell up and drop dead. When he did not die, the islanders changed
their minds
from believing Paul to be a god rather than a criminal. Oh
how easily folks can change their minds. God can use events that are
viewed as disasters to be victories if it is His Will!
-
Acts
28:7-10, Ministering to Others:
A wealthy official on the island by the name of Publius welcomed
Paul and the castaways to his estate and he
entertained
them graciously for three days. Publius’ father was sick with a
fever and dysentery. Paul went into his father was
lying in his afflictions,
prayed for him and laid hands upon him and
God brought about healing. When word spread of the miraculous
healing, other sick people of the island were brought to Paul and
they also
experienced healing. When the time came for Paul and the others to
continue their
voyage to Rome, the islanders provided everything they need for the
trip. Signs, wonders, and miracles were instrumental in
drawing non-believers to Christianity. On many occasions, the needs
of the non-believers were met before the sharing of the Gospel.
Take
Aways:
-
God
provides provisions for His own from unexpected and unlikely
sources. Believers need to be appreciative of God’s providential
care.
-
We
need to share with others out of our Blessings from God.
-
The
greatest gift that we can share with others is our testimony of
God’s goodness toward us.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Is
any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and
let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the
Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall
raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven
him. Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another,
that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous
man availeth much.” James
5:14-16 KJV
“Therefore
humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you
in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJV
“[The
earth [is] the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they
that dwell therein.” Psalms 24:1 KJV
“You
ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend
[it] on your pleasures.” James 4:3 NKJV
“I
have been young, and [now] am old; yet have I not seen the righteous
forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” Psalms 37:25 KJV
“Every
good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from
the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of
turning.” James 1:17 KJV
