Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
The USET Office of Tribal Public Health (OTPH) is committed to keeping USET member Tribal Nations informed with proactive information that is essential for protecting the health of individuals and communities. In the wake of Hurricane Helene and the arrival of Hurricane Milton, we want to ensure that Tribal Nations are aware of resources offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Federally recognized Tribal Nations are not required to request presidential emergency or major disaster declaration through their respective states. Tribal governments may directly request these declarations to supplement their efforts in mitigating or preventing disaster threats. These declarations can help protect lives, property, public health, and safety.
For more details on this process, please refer to this fact sheet to learn more about Pre- Disaster Emergency Declarations and Major Disaster Declaration. Each region is assigned a FEMA Regional Tribal Liaison to facilitate a nation-to-nation relationship. You can find your FEMA contact here. They are available to assist your Tribal Nation in navigating emergency or disaster declarations.
This information is important not only for Tribal Nations affected by Hurricane Helene but also for those who may face similar situations in the future. As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, we will provide any updates and critical information as they become available. Please continue to monitor your emergency preparedness plans and feel free to reach out to us at usetepi@usetinc.org if you need support or have any questions during this time.
