On the Homefront

We had a rather soggy Halloween this year, and there weren’t too many trick-or-treaters. Those we did have were mostly done by7:30, although one diehard showed up at 9:00 pm, even though our light was off.

Of course, this begs the question, what to do with all the leftover candy?

Now, you might say, ‘eat it’, but I think that’s a few too many calories. We could freeze it, but I think the temptation would be too great just to thaw it at the first opportunity.

That makes me curious. What do you do with leftover treats?

Outlining a story

With the release of Guardian of the Crown, I spent some time last week preparing the next book in the series. I won’t begin writing Enemy of the Crown for at least six months, but that hasn’t stopped me from plotting the storyline. As with most of my other stories, this one started with a simple paragraph description but has grown significantly since I began breaking it down into chapters.

Even with all the major plot details worked out, I’ll likely find other interesting tidbits to include. No doubt, I will revisit the outline several times over the coming months as ideas come to me. I like to think of my outlines as living documents, able to adapt and change as they evolve.

How much of my outline will be left unchanged when I begin writing? We will see.

Reviews are coming in for Guardian of the Crown

NaNoWriMo

We’re trying something new for Temple Commander: recording a daily video about the day’s progress. I hope it will give aspiring authors some idea of what it’s like to be a full-time writer. This time of year is especially important for many due to NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month.

The project started in July, 1999 and has since ballooned to include more than 455,000 participants in 2019. The object of NaNoWriMo is to attempt to write a 50,000-word manuscript before the end of the month. This, of course, is aimed at creating the first draft only, but in the years since its inception, the program has led to nearly 400 novels being picked up by publishers and another 200 either being self-published or released by smaller presses. Not bad for a non-profit organization.

Who knows—perhaps one of you will create the next great novel!

Work In Progress Update

Temple Commander currently sits at almost 14,000 words, with just over four chapters written. The characters arrive at their new destination and begin settling in. Unfortunately, all is not well, with hints of trouble making their way to the surface.

Like the previous two temple books, this book has an element of the sea to it, requiring me to make some rather extensive notes about the Temple Knights of Saint Agnes fleet. Thanks to the events of Temple Captain, the fleet now includes several captured Halvarian ships, but most were renamed to something a little more fitting for their new owners.

How does this all fit into the book? I’m afraid you’ll have to wait and see. (Or should that be sea?)

Now, it’s back to writing for me.
