Today's Bible Study Lesson
“A Just King Is Born”
Aim: Explain
how
the wise men point to the inclusion of the marginalized;
Grieve
for
those
who suffer innocently due to the world’s brokenness and sin; and
Identify
with
the wise men’s decision to perform an act of civil disobedience.
Background:
Matthew 2
Bible Lesson:
Matthew 2:1-12
Memory
Verse:
“And when they were come into the house, they saw the
young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him:
and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him
gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Matthew
2 begins with the wise men from the East, believed to be from the
Persian Kingdom which is modern day Iran arriving in Jerusalem
seeking the Messiah.
-
These
wise men from the East had traveled a far distance following a star
which they believed arose at the birth of the newborn king of the
Jews. They were not of Jewish decent, but they wanted to see and
worship this newborn king. Their first stop was at the King’s
palace to inquire of the King of Judea as to the location of the
newborn king of the Jews. Herod the Great who was king of Judea was
disturbed by this inquiry for he was not ready to relinquish his
reign to another. Likewise, others in Judea were concerned. King
Herod’s concern prompted him to assemble leading religious leaders
and teachers to find out where the Messiah was to be born. This
inquiry gave evidence to the king’s belief in the wise men’s
information.
-
The
religious leaders and teacher answered King Herod with the prophesy
found in Micah
5:2,
which stated that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judea.
Bethlehem, the city of David, was not the most prominent town in the
region. Similarly, David was the youngest and least likely of
Jesse’s sons to be selected by God as king. Armed with this
information and avoiding looking ignorant of the Messiah’s coming,
the king met privately with the wise men and questioned them as to
when the star appeared and he directed them to go to Bethlehem to
search for the child. He asked them to return to Jerusalem with the
information of the child’s location so that he could also worship
him. The king’s motive for his request was less than truthful. He
actually sought to slay the child who was a threat to his dynasty.
-
With
King Herod’s blessing and directions, the wise men resumed their
quest of locating the newborn king. Upon leaving the presence of
the king, the star that the wise men had followed reappeared.
Similar to the pillar of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by
night that led the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus
13:21-22),
the star guided the wise men to a house in Bethlehem where baby
Jesus and his family were residing. When they saw the star rest
above a house, they rejoiced in their journey’s success.
-
When
the wise men entered the house and found the child and his mother,
Mary, they bowed down and worshiped him. They presented the gifts
that they had brought, gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Isaiah
60:6).
Gold for royalty, frankincense for the anointing of a king and myrrh
a spice used for the preparation of a body for burial. Mary had
even more to ponder in her heart at the visit of these dignitaries
who had traveled from the East to welcome her baby into the world
for His mission.
-
Before
the wise men prepared to return home, God warned them in a dream to
not return to Herod and they obediently went home by another route.
-
In
the passages that follow, but that are not part of our study, King
Herod is very disturbed that the wise men did not return as directed
with the location of the child. He commanded the murder of all male
children in the region who were two years old or younger (Jeremiah
3:15;
Matthew
2:16).
An angel appeared to Joseph and directs him to take Mary and baby
Jesus to Egypt (Hebrews
11:1)until
the all clear signal is given for him to return with his family.
Take
Aways:
-
Recognize
that even though the wise men were not Jewish, men and women who are
wise must seek Jesus for He is the only way to Eternal Life.
-
The
Bible is true that every tongue must confess and every knee must bow
and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord of all and King of Kings.
-
If
believers listen and seek God’s Guidance, He will direct the way
we should go.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“That
at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven,
and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth; And [that]
every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory
of God the Father.” Philippians 2:10-11 KJV
“Trust
in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own
understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct
thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
“Thy
word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm
119:105 KJV
“Seek
the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.”
Isaiah 55:6 NKJV
“And
I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall
find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that
asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened. ... If ye then, being evil, know how to
give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall [your]
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Luke
11:9-10, 13 KJV
