Quick ways to identify "phishing" e-mail
Phishing e-mails try to collect information from you or infect you with ransomware. You can always forward the e-mail support@hammertech.us for our opinion, but if you want to see if the e-mail is legitimate, some tips:
- Hit Reply and examine who the sender really is. Does it make sense?
- Hover your mouse over any link before clicking to reveal the website address. Is it going to a website that makes sense?
- Suspicious attachments
- Are the attachments in a zip file? Zip files are often used to hide viruses
- Is the attachment actually a web page when it claims to be some other type of file?
- Suspicious content
- Is the email saying you have a fax or voicemail or scan from a service you aren't using?
- Is the email saying you need to update your password or that someone bought something you didn't?
- Are they indicating that it is urgent to take action?
