Hey y'all,
If you haven’t otherwise heard the news, I am bidding a bittersweet farewell to The Gazette to cover the LSU Tigers at The Advocate, but John Steppe will be your new Hawkeye writer moving forward.
Thank y’all for welcoming me with open arms and for letting me tell the stories of your football team and women’s sports for the past eight months, I’m going to miss it, but I’m excited to move closer to home.
Before I hand this newsletter over to John, I wanted to go out with a bang by giving y’all Iowa junior quarterback Spencer Petras’ order from Estela’s, which is apparently his go-to stop for a burrito bowl. How do I know this? He’s always posting about it on Instagram!
Make no mistake: Petras is a burrito bowl, not burrito guy. His reasoning is that in California, there isn’t rice in burritos. What he likes about the bowls is he can take his side of chips and dip them into the bowl.
“I go Spanish rice, extra refried beans, double steak, hot salsa, cilantro, guac(amole), jalapeños, cheese and then I get a side of chips,” Petras said. “No sour cream, I like sour cream, but that’s a little extra calories I don’t need. I get spinach too to get my greens in. Estela’s is one of the few places that has that as an option. You get your vitamins and put a chip in for crunch, it’s a good mix.”
He did used to live down the street from La Regia, though, which has his stamp of approval for tacos.
When asked if there were more analytics that went into his Estela’s order or offensive plays, he said, “The stakes are probably higher for a play action pass, but there’s a lot that goes into both.”
