Author Interview with Baileigh Higgins

Name: Baileigh Higgins

Question 1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a Sci-Fi writer?

I actually fell in love with SciFi by way of its sub-genre Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic fiction during my teen years. I am fascinated by the human capacity to survive in even the most hopeless of situations.

Question 2) What authors and books inspire your writing?

Books like the 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, I am Legend by Richard Matheson, and As the World Dies by Rhiannon Frater really inspired my own desire to write Apocalyptic Fiction.

Question 3) Are you an extrovert or introvert? How well do you like book signings and other interaction with readers?

I'm an introvert so book signings and any public gatherings are difficult for me, but I manage as well as I can. Interaction with my readers, however, is not hard at all. I enjoy chatting to people on a one-on-one basis and learning more about them and their lives

Question 4) What is unique about writing in your genre?

Apocalyptic Fiction is all about the human condition, and there are really so many ways in which you can explore this. From the very worst humanity has to offer to the very best. So diversity in books is guaranteed.

Question 5) Have you ever created a character with an actor or a person you know in mind?

Actor, no. Person I know, yes. Quite often. Not that they know about it, of course!

Question 6) What inspires you to write?

I wouldn't say I'm inspired to write. For me it's a need. If I don't write, I become quite depressed and obnoxious!

Question 7) Are you Self-, Indie-, or Traditionally published? Why?

Self-published all the way simply because I prefer keeping control of my work and business model.

Question 8) Do all authors have to be grammar perfectionists; or do you use a Copy Editor?

I don't think you have to be a grammar perfectionist in order to write. That's what professional editors are for. But it certainly helps to reduce editing costs if you can submit a fairly clean manuscript. If you do self-edit, though, then a perfectionist attitude is a necessity. As is grammar checking software, beta readers, and proof readers.

Question 9) “Writing is a get-rich-quick scheme.” And, “All writers are independently wealthy.” How true?

Never in my life would I view writing as a get-rich-quick scheme. It's incredibly hard work, and sometimes your gains are very slow in the making. As with any business you'll have your ups and downs, your successes and your flops. It all comes down to how much you're willing to put in.

Question 10) Plotter or Pantser (free flowing)? Do you write from an outline, or just start writing and go with the flow?

I do a bit of plotting beforehand which I'll use as a general guideline when I write. This mostly involves the setting, main character, and overall plot, but once I start writing, I often deviate from this guideline as the story takes me in its true direction.

Question 11) What is the secret to becoming a best-selling author?

I don't believe there is a secret, as such. What works for one won't work for another. I do believe you need to find your own sweet spot. That balance between writing and marketing that you can both sustain and thrive on. I also believe having the fundamentals in place is extremely important, such as proper blurbs, categories, keywords, book covers, etc for your genre. Add a healthy dose of marketing and you just might get there.

Question 12) Do you write book reviews? How important are reviews for your work?

Yes, I always review the books I've read unless my review is likely to be extremely poor. In that case, I'll abstain. Book reviews are of premier importance to me, to all authors, in fact. Without enough reviews, one cannot do proper marketing plus readers often won't buy books with no or little reviews.

Question 13) Do you have a favorite book or series you have written? Which one?

The Dangerous Days Series is both my favorite and my most popular series. I poured my heart and soul into those books, and I guess it shows! Plus it was just a fun project to write.

Question 14) What are you working on next?

The next series I'm working on is called Hybrid Theory. I'm actually very excited about this particular story as I'm sure it will pack quite a punch. Experiments gone wrong, hybrid monsters on the loose, humanity hovering on the brink of extinction...what's not to love?

Question 15) Have a favorite Author Question? What is it? Please Answer.

What does your writing desk look like? This question often delivers hilarious answers. Mine, for instance, looks painfully neat...until you look in the waste basket and discover tons of empty energy drink cans and candy wrappers!
