Time Zero by Carolyn Cohagan

Happy Friday, readers!

This week’s book is a YA dystopian science fiction novel set in a futuristic Manhattan where girls aren’t allowed to read.

Introducing Time Zero by Carolyn Cohagan, an engrossing tale of control and compassion and one girl’s personal rebellion.

Steeped in the dystopian tradition of The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984 and Brave New World, the society in Time Zero imposes on women many of the restrictions and rules that women have been subjected to throughout history.

While this world is invented, the rules and the consequences for breaking them are very real.

Fifteen-year-old Mina Clark is now of marriageable age, and the story opens on the day of her Offering. Unbeknownst to her controlling mother, however, Mina’s grandmother has been teaching her to read, leading Mina down a rebellious path that not only threatens her family’s reputation, but puts all their lives in danger.

Compelling, engrossing, and incredibly realistic, this novel hooked me from the very beginning. Mina’s situation is at once regrettable and relatable. Her fraught relationship with her mother is all too familiar. There’s no better villain for a young woman trying to find her independence and true self than her controlling mother.

Time Zero won the 2017 International Book Award for Young Adult Fiction, and today it’s on sale for just $1.99 to celebrate the launch of the sequel, Time Next, which launched yesterday.

Read it, enjoy it, let us know what you thought in the Facebook group.

See you next week with another SFF book.
