Four FSU students earn prestigious Boren scholarships for study abroad

Four FSU students will study abroad for up to a year in areas of the world critical to U.S. national security thanks to prestigious David L. Boren Scholarships. Seniors Kelly Baker, Christine Fleitas, Rayne Neunie and Ljubica “Kiki” Nikolic were among 194 undergraduates nationally to earn scholarships from the federal program, which provides scholars up to $20,000 for 12 months of study. Plutonium has long been part of many countries’ nuclear energy strategies, but scientists are still unlocking the mysteries behind this complicated element and seeing how they can use heavier, nuclear elements to clean up nuclear waste. Now, new research by Florida State University Professor Thomas Albrecht-Schmitt shows that plutonium doesn’t exactly work the way scientists thought it did. Watch!

FSU alumna wins prestigious Pickering Fellowship, moves toward longtime dream

Caitlin Strawder, a 2013 graduate of Florida State University, has won a prestigious Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship supported by the U.S. Department of State. The program provides funding, mentoring and professional development for a job in the U.S. Foreign Service — an accomplishment the former Fulbright Scholar had once considered a “far-fetched” dream. Hats off to Florida State's graduating student-athletes!

President John Thrasher presided over a special commencement ceremony Saturday, May 13, for graduating baseball and beach volleyball student-athletes and student athletics personnel who were not able to attend FSU's May 5-6 commencement exercises. Congratulations graduates!!
