Iron Dragoons by Richard Fox

Hey ,

This week’s book is Iron Dragoons by Richard Fox.

Coincidence led me to this military science fiction novel. Some friends on Facebook were talking about it after it came out. I saw their (very positive) impressions, but at first I brushed it off because I was busy. It was one of those books that I would get around to reading...someday.

A few weeks passed. The next time I saw Iron Dragoons was on the list of nominees for the 2017 Dragon Awards.

Huh. That’s something.

Now, the Dragon Awards are interesting—unlike the other big awards (Nebulas, Hugos) where SF authors vote on the winners from among their colleagues, the Dragon Award winners are voted on by the fans. I was excited about the new award and had already decided that I would read as many Dragon-nominated books in 2017 as I could manage (I did five, I think).

Since Iron Dragoons was already on my radar, I figured why not start there?

I was not disappointed. From the prologue, this book is riveting visually, which is a funny thing to say about a book but absolutely true. The story opens on two mechs in a battle on the edge of a volcano’s crater. The action scene that follows is dynamic and frightening in its power, like watching Jackie Chan swing nunchucks, or Chuck Norris kick something heavy.

What makes the book special, however, is the story of what the young naive soldiers have to go through to become mechs.

I’ve rarely been so invested in a character’s transformation. And all this among more incredible action, wise-cracking boot camp humor, and a deeper mystery underlying it all that’s intertwined with religion in a really fascinating way.

No surprise that this novel won the 2017 Dragon Award for best military science fiction novel. Great story, great writing. If you love character-driven war stories, this one’s for you.

Read it, enjoy it, let us know what you thought in the Facebook group.

See you next week with another SFF book.
