The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

Hi *|FNAME|*,

This week’s book is The Word For World Is Forest.

This Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novella by the late, great Ursula K. Le Guin has a special place in my heart.

The first page is an absolutely brilliant opening to a book. I’ve studied it, and hold it up as a shining example of excellent characterization.

Read the first page and read my thoughts about it on my blog »

Here’s another interesting story … there’s a rumor in the publishing world that George Lucas ripped the idea for his Ewok’s from Le Guin’s Athsheans, introduced in this book. Both creatures are short, fuzzy forest dwellers forced to take up arms. Where the Ewok’s are as much comic relief as they are allies to the main characters in Return of the Jedi, the Athsheans are more nuanced and three-dimensional as a culture. They’re a pacifist people forcibly displaced by humans, transformed into killers as they fight for survival against hostile—not to mention mostly clueless—invaders.

It’s a narrative that explores the darker aspects of colonialism, with the stunning, lyrical prose that Le Guin was loved for.

Read it, enjoy it, let us know what you thought in the Facebook group.

See you next week with another SFF book.
