Course Spotlight

Check out our new courses for Spring 2018!

SOCI 120: Sociology Through Literature - Prof. Gershon Shafir

In this course we will examine how literature and poetry may illuminate and sometimes go beyond sociological writings in highlighting and spelling out sociological concepts and social processes. The course will cover basic concepts (social role, power), economic concepts (class, greed), and political concepts (colonialism, revolution). We will read selections from works by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Jorge Borges, Fyodor Dostoevsky, William Golding, Sinclair Lewis, George Orwell, Ayn Rand, etc.

SOCI 164: Green Movements & Environmental Policies - Prof. Suzanne Burg

In this course we will look at how environmental movements have created change in different countries around the world, as well as the obstacles that they face. Starting with the United States, we will examine the emergence of the environmental movement, as well as the environmental justice movement which emerged in response to environmental racism. We will compare these movements to those that have arisen in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Finally, we will explore the global movement that has emerged to address the issue of climate change, and the challenges that climate change activists have encountered in mobilizing widespread action. Despite the transnational nature of environmental problems, and the need to address them at the global scale, green movements are still hampered by national governments pursuing their own interests. What ways have environmental activists and green politicians found to pursue their goals despite these obstacles?
