Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support! Summer is a busy time, and we've got lots of exciting items to discuss.

I'd also like to personally invite you to our next Town Hall on June 28th, 6:30-8:00pm, at the Government Center. Additional information is listed below.

Independence Boulevard Transportation And Infrastructure Improvements

Over the next eight years, we will complete three significant projects on the vital Independence Boulevard expressway!

  1. We are excited that the widening of Independence Blvd from Wallace Lane to I-485 has been expedited. The construction phase of this project was originally scheduled to begin in 2022, but it will now begin a year earlier, in 2021. At this time this project is proposed to be complete by 2025.

  2. By October 2017, the current construction from Albemarle Road to Wallace Lane will be completed.

  3. In Spring 2018, the conversion of the Independence Blvd Busway will begin. That construction is currently scheduled to last 15-18 months. When the current construction project (U-209B) and the Busway Conversion (U-5526A) projects are complete, we will have one Express Lane in each direction from Wallace Lane to Albemarle Road. We will also have a single reversible Express Lane from Albemarle Road to I-277.

The City has been collaborating with the Town of Matthews and NCDOT to finish these projects as soon as possible to improve our regional infrastructure and transportation.

The Coliseum Crossing Project

The Coliseum Crossing project is a great win for the East side and for our city. It's great to see the private sector following the lead of public infrastructure investments. We collaborated with NCDOT and Town of Matthews to expedite the widening of Independence and this project directly aligns with my larger goal of spreading jobs and economic opportunities throughout the city!
