From the Principal

Students are now into the most intensive part of their programme – the job hunt!

This month I’d like to share with you five top tips for performing well at interview:

1. Practice and prepare
Review the typical job questions employers ask, and practise your answers. The Quest Careers Team are here for you to go through interview responses as many times as is needed!

2. Research the company, and show what you know
Do your homework about the employer and the industry, so you are ready for the interview question ‘What do you know about this company?’ If this question is not asked, you should try to demonstrate what you know about the company on your own. The Quest team can help you find out more about your interviewer before you go.

3. Get ready ahead of time
Don't wait until the last minute to pick out an interview outfit, print extra copies of your CV, or find a notepad and pen. Have one good outfit ready, so you can interview at short notice without having to worry about what to wear. Book in with Quest trainer Emma Samengo-Turner for a personal style consultation if you haven’t already had one. When you have an interview lined up, get everything ready the night before.

4. Be on time (That means early!)
Get to the interview on time. On time means five to ten minutes early. If needs be, take some time to go to the location before the day of your interview so you know exactly where you are going and how long it will take to get there. Allow extra time if you need to travel during rush hour. On the interview day you can always wait in a coffee shop nearby if you arrive with extra time to spare.

5. Try to stay calm
During interview, try to relax and stay as calm as possible. Remember that your body language says as much about you as your answers to the questions. The interviewer wants to see you the person, not you the bag of nerves!

Take away tip: proper preparation will allow you to exude confidence and maximise your chances of success at interview.

Good luck to all our students!

A keen eye for detail

The Branding Challenge is a project introducing some basic graphic design skills to the group at the end of their short branding/advertising theory unit.

It is run by Matt Marriott, a professional graphic designer, and after a morning of design theory and consolidation exercises, in pairs, the groups blind pick a current brand logo (from a range previously identified by Matt) and have to work together with him to create three new logos - taking brand history and identity, values and typical target market into consideration. The day finishes with a presentation of the three ideas to the “client” (Matt!)

Insurance day for the BAs

On Tuesday 22nd May and Wednesday 23rd May, our Business Apprentice students were given an insight into what a career in insurance entails.

This was kicked off with a guest talk from two industry professionals within insurance. This gave the students the perfect opportunity to ask any questions before they were split into groups to begin the task.

The task itself involved the students visiting different venues around London and assessing the relevant risk at hand. The groups each then had to write up a report of these and present them back to the industry professional. A true day in the life of an Underwriter!

Mock interviews

This month we exposed the students to real life interview scenarios during their mock interviews where they received constructive feedback

Our recruitment fair will also be taking place later this month. We have invited 11 recruitment agencies in to meet the students specialising in a range of industry sectors. The recruitment agencies attending are: Major Players, Morgan Spencer, Crone Corkill, Anderson Hoare, Career Moves, Lisa Levan, Deverell Smith, Angela Mortimer, Adidem Consulting, Norma Skemp and Tiger Recruitment.

Good luck to all students with the job hunting process!

Assessment centres

The students have taken part in assessment centres to help prepare them for the interview process in large corporations.

They took part in an in-tray exercise where they had to prioritize a range of tasks, as well as team building exercises to solve problems.

Key competencies assessed were verbal communication, teamwork, analysing and investigation and time management.

It was a really successful day – and we would like to congratulate you all for the professionalism you demonstrated!
