Name: Nicola McDonagh

Question 1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a Sci-Fi writer?

When some students I was teaching creative writing to asked me to write a sci-fi/dystopian book for them. How could I refuse?

2) What authors and books inspire your writing?

Anything by the late, great, Ursula Le Guin. The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, More than Human by Theodore Sturgeon, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick. Non sc-ifi authors include: Sylvia Plath, Vladimir Nabokov, Shakespeare, Flannery O'connor, Flann O'Brien, Charles Dickens and Mervyn Peake.

Question 4) What is unique about writing in your genre?

You can let your imagination soar. Invent the craziest things, aliens, planets, food, anything really so long as you allow yourself to explore your creativity. Anything is possible when you write sci-fi.

Question 6) What inspires you to write?

Dreams, paintings, star gazing, people watching, articles in the news and just random thoughts I quickly jot down.

Question 7) Are you Self-, Indie-, or Traditionally published? Why?

I was published by an Indie publisher with my debut novel, but they closed down after a couple of years so I decided to self-publish. I am glad that I did. I have more control over content, covers and marketing than I used to. Also, I get a bigger cut of the royalties. I like being in control of my books.

Question 8) Do all authors have to be grammar perfectionists; or do you use a Copy Editor?

I think all authors should have a good grasp of grammar. It is okay to use online editors, but they are very limited and miss a lot of mistakes.

Question 10) Plotter or Pantser (free flowing)? Do you write from an outline, or just start writing and go with the flow?

I do both. With a novel, I tend to do a chapter plan, then I usually just go with the flow. A plan can help you keep track of your story and plot. With short stories I tend to be freer in my approach and let the words pour out.

Question 13) Do you have a favorite book or series you have written? Which one?

I only have one series, so that would be my favorite. It's called The Song of Forgetfulness.

Question 14) What are you working on next?

I plan to change genre and write a psychological crime thriller. I've heard they do rather well.

Question 15) Have a favorite Author Question? What is it? Please Answer.

Who is your favorite character in your book?
